Since 1987 Geert Vanoorlé has been steadily painting a meandering oeuvre with the aestheticism of the gentleman. He creates an elegant beauty averse of bravura and big gestures. For a moment, the wicked world outside is left at the doorstep. (N.D.)

The works might seem rough or imperfect, but nothing could be further from the truth: every detail counts. These works require time though. Only slowly does a slightly sharper angle or a slightly darker stroke of paint become apparent to the eye. Then, the contained simplicity that the artist achieves through a focussed exercise in controlling chaos shines through. Preserving ample vigor in these pure, fragile works is only made possible by Vanoorlé’s sensitivity for composition and aesthetics.

His colour palette plays a pivotal part in this. On the one hand, he sometimes brings together subtle and melodious shades; on the other hand he sometimes goes for bold contrasts and primary colours. He explores its limits, however little space there might be. He questions his work time and again (E.V.)
